3 McDonald’s Mascots Weirder than Happy the Happy Meal
This morning, McDonald’s showcased their new Happy Meal mascot:
Happy, a singing, self-multiplying, anthropomorphized Happy Meal box, proceeded to terrify the Internet for the next few hours. Yet, this is not the weirdest mascot McDonald’s has ever created! Here are 3 McDonald’s mascots more ill-fated than Happy:
1. Mac Tonight:
Mac Tonight wasn’t even for kids — he was created to market McDonald’s for dinner in the late 1980s.
But instead of coming across as cool and hip, Mac Tonight had the air of a washed up lounge singer and was dropped from all US ads within a matter of years. Interesting fact: Mac Tonight was played by Doug Jones, who went onto play The Pale Man in Guillermo Del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth!)
2. Uncle O'Grimacey
Grimace’s uncle (!) from the McDonaldland equivalent of Ireland (!)
Uncle O'Grimacey used to show up in the late 1970’s and early 80’s as a promotion for McDonald’s famous Shamrock Shakes. He was crazy about a Shamrock Shake.
But Uncle O'Grimacey's existence raises more questions than it answers. Where’s the rest of Grimace’s family? Is Uncle O'Grimacey Grimace’s only real father figure? Does it bum Grimace out that Uncle O'Grimacey seems like kind of a deadbeat that only shows up once a year because HE wants something?
No wonder Grimace always seems so depressed.
3. Talking Trash Cans
In the 1970s, McDonalds released a commercial featuring…trash cans?
Kids were implored to shove their trash in these guys’ mouths.
Even Ronald, in a rare moment of clarity, has a look on his face that reads “Dear God, we’ve crossed a line this time.”
Maybe, all things considered, we should feel lucky that we have Happy the Happy Meal instead of those other monsters.
