ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: ABSURDNOISE
It’s only fitting to start off our Artist Spotlight series this month with one of our favorite master’s of the horror movie GIF. We talked to absurdnoise about GIFs and, of course, Halloween!
When did you first start making GIFs?What was the first GIF you made?
I started making GIFs just about 2 years ago, but over this past year making them has really just consumed what little soul I have. My first GIFs were so awful they’re probably funny now, but I think Roseanne holding a check talking about going to “La Sizzler” was one of my first for sure.
Do you watch things with the intention of GIFing them or do you just stumble upon these perfect GIF moments while watching?
Nowadays I literally see the world in GIF form, so I keep a running list of all my random nonsensical ideas and of everything I see that I think needs to GIFed. But sometimes I have a specific movie in mind I want to work with, and I’ll go through it frame by frame till I find that perfect moment that speaks to my awful aesthetics.
What is your guilty pleasure when it comes to movies or tv shows?
Everything I love and hold dear is a guilty pleasure. I mean let’s not beat around the bush, I absolutely love anything awful and over the top cheesy. But if I had to pick a show I would go with The Facts Of Life, I mean cousin Geri and Mrs. Garrett are basically my everything. And for a movie I would say Pollyanna for sure, I just love to see that little goody two shoes fall out that window over an over again, now that’s what I call entertainment!
Who are some of your favorite GIF artists/ artists in general?
I’m going to have to pick the two artist whom I have the most in common with and whose work I can relate to the most, retro-fiend.tumblr.com and auntjohn.com. And is just so happens they are also both Cousin Geri Fan Club members too, which never hurts in my book.
Favorite scary movie moment?
This is a hard one, but I’m going to have to go with the exploding crack head hooker scene from the masterpiece Frankenhooker. That scene speaks to me on so many levels. I mean it’s cheesy, gory, and just plain reprehensible, which is everything I love in a good horror movie moment.
What are you going to be for Halloween? What was your all-time favorite Halloween costume?
My rough idea so far is being a radiation victim, I recently found all these prosthetic eyeballs that I definitely want to glue all over me, as for the rest of the look I’m still debating the details. But my best Halloween look was the year I went as the conjoined twins Abby & Brittany, it was beyond tasteless.
